Richard Wagner: Der Fliegende Holländer, overture
Arnold Schönberg: 6 Orchestral Songs, Op. 8
Bohuslav Martinů: Symphony No. 6 "Fantaisies symphoniques"

Marek Šedivý - conductor
Melanie Diener - soprano

The first concert by Marek Šedivý in the position of main guest conductor opens with the dramatic overture to the opera The Flying Dutchman by Richard Wagner, in the author's own words inspired by his voyage across a stormy sea in 1839. The evening's soloist, German soprano Melanie Diener, who has performed with conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Riccardo Chailly and Bernard Haitink, will then perform a rarely heard cycle of songs.

Arnold Schönberg composed it at the start of the 20th century before his first move towards atonality. The programme concludes with the Symphony No. 6 with the subtitle "Fantaisies symphoniques", today considered one of Bohuslav Martinů's best compositions. He wrote it in the mid-1950s in US exile commissioned by the Boston Symphony Orchestra and conductor Charles Much, with whom he became friends between the wars in Paris.
