This extraordinary June concert will bring together the works of Witodl Lutosławski and Ludwig van Beethoven. This time he has invited his regular artistic partner Alban Gerhardt, a German cellist who has worked with some of the world's finest orchestras including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Royal Concertgebouw Amsterdam and the Chicago Symphony. Gerhardt will perform the solo part of Witold Lutosławski's masterful Concerto for Cello and Orchestra, composed in 1970 for the legendary Mstislav Rostropovich. After the intermission, one of Beethoven's most popular works, Symphony No. 7 in A major, sometimes called the "apotheosis of dance" for its concise rhythmic ideas, will be performed. The German composer began working on the work while staying at a spa in the northern Bohemian town of Teplice.
